BumZen

I was just thinking the other day (yes... it happens) about that Mercenary has a pretty all around target group (if you can call it that?)... I mean; it doesn't matter if you like normal metal, death metal or progressive metal, thrash metal, power metal and so forth... it is all represented in the music of mercenary, or well, that is what I think, and I am a fan of all genres mentioned above including black, and I love every aspect of Mercenary so far (looking away from First Breath[:p] hehe)

But to get to the point: I was curios what the fans of Mercenary normally listens to besides Mercenary?
to mention a few of my favs:

Death / Control Denied (this is for sure my fav band(s))
Iron Maiden
Time Machine / Khali
Dream Theater
Iced Earth
Twilight / Beyond Twilight
Rush
Testament / Dragonlord
Nevermore
Judas Priest
Agent Steel
Queensryche
Slayer
Evergrey
Kamelot
Immortal
Marduk
King Diamond / Mercyful Fate
Deicide
Sepultura
Manticora
Cornerstone
Black Sabbath / Ozzy
diverse metal Operas like AINA and Avantasia etc.

this should pretty much give an idea of my taste...

so go ahead, post yours :) (I am VERY interested in the lists of the mercenary band members... hehehehehe:D

Hmm... I must say I am VERY surprised about your list... Many of them I either can't stand or haven't even heard of before. The only ones I was expecting to see was Steve Vai and Dream Theater. Though you also have some other cool bands on there (Death, Pink Floyd, Queen, Soilwork and Pantera).
I was actually expecting to see guys like Schenker, Malmsteen, Satriani etc on the list as well. But I guess this is a good thing concerning Mercenary since you bring in a more poppish/mellow sound to Mercenary. awesome :)

Mads

PS: liking other genres is cool I think. It just shows that you like whatever you like despite what others may think. I like Hiphop and Surf music as well for example. Also Jazz can be cool, but I am mostly into rock/metal.

I'll put mine in here as well...
funny to see how different people are in taste - and then it all comes down to balls, metal and melody :)

I can also go along with the danish acts, they've done some amazing songs:

Kashmir
Tim C.
D.A.D.
Carpark North
Serras
Invocator
Mnemic

Foreign acts :

[soft end first, if anyone shouldn't notice :D]

Queen
The Police / Sting
Genesis / Phil Collins
Extreme
Jean Michel Jarre
Danny Elfman
U2
Zappa
Tom Waits
Björk
Toto
Stevie Wonder

Dream Theater
Symphony X
Devin Townsend
Queensryche
Iron Maiden
Ozzy Osbourne
Led Zeppelin
Metallica
Dimmu Borgir
Evergrey
Linkin Park
In Flames
Pain of Salvation
Planet X

For some reason I also have a strange attraction to certain rap/hip hop acts from time to time [:0]

If u think that's annoying, you should listen to some of the old Sodom - "Agent Orange" - sounds really funny....
You take your virtues in a tow
And commit a sin
By defects in your character
You will always imagine - from "Incest".
Try saying it with a thick german accent. I always have a good laugh, when I hear that album.

C.Debussy, M.Ravell, Stravinski, R.Korsakov, Arnold Schønberg, B.Bartok G.Holst.

Modern composers:
Arvo Part, Arne Nordheim, Stockhausen, Dead Can dance and some other maniacs..:)

And just to make it right here..I`m not into todays patethic filmmusic. Some of it is ok. Most of it is more like a parody of what the old masters created...

Besides these 3 generes I listen to more "well known" artists like Tom Waits, Simon & Garfunkel, Madona, Tori Amos, and some others...and I listen to guitarheros like Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen and Petrucci..but thats not because they play great music, but rather for inspiration on my own playing.

Anyway..I love the kind of music they make. But I`m very critical on this genere of music. I only listen to the best of it..like those I had on my list. I think i have reasonably diverse taste in music, i hold many artists from the 50's through to now in high regard so i will just list a few to give a general impression....

Older Bands (non metal)
~Alice Cooper
~David Bowie
~Gene Pitney
~TREX
~Janis Joplin
~ACDC
etc etc

The rest i will just list as i think of them

Iron Maiden
Megadeth
Mercyful Fate/King Diamond
Judas Priest
Death
Immortal
Suffocation
Children Of Bodom
Slayer
Unleashed
Emperor
Macabre
Mayhem
Manowar
Vital Remains
etc etc i could rattle on forever and a day

Being Australian i suppose i think it only fair to list a few Australian bands that get my vote as well

Psycroptic
Befallen
Veil Of Anguish
Destroyer 666
Astriaal
Excarnated
Oni
Slaughter Thou

i know i am missing out on some huge Australian bands here but my memory has temporarily lapsed so i'll leave it at that.

"evergrey (-black? wonder how mercenary figured that "Ever..-[colour])"

I guess we got the idea the same place as evergrey did rather than from their name to be honest - as a pun upon a classic song being called an 'evergreen', hence classic metal songs would, in all modesty, be everblacks! :D

Hey man... welcome! No problem about bringing back this topic, it is always interesting to see other peoples fav bands. And there is not much action on this board, so this is only a good thing.

Judging from your other fav bands I find it quite odd that you like Mercenary that much. because most of your other bands are power metal or just normal heavy metal/hard rock.

About the Australian bands, then I really think you should check out Eyefear. Their new album "9 elements of inner vision" is simply put a masterpiece. Strong vocals (reminds me of Lance King and Tobias from Lanfear) and strong melodies. Check them out...

Hope you will stick around :-)

Hello everyone!

Just have to start by saying that 11 Dreams really is a great album!
Long before I ever heard of Mercenary (which is quite recently), I always had that picture in my head of how I wanted a metal album to sound in terms of sound, diversity, type of lyrics, and so on...
Of course I never thought that would happen until I heard this album... No shit!
So, while this album blew me away, I was kind of thinking "Fuck, these guys stole the music.. ehh which I have not written yet" :-)

Ok, now that the violins have stoped playing, back to the subject. My fav. band in no particular order:

Darkane
Evergrey
In Flames
Pathos
Symphony X
Devin Townsend (all of his stuff)
Mercenary
Masterplan

More seriously:

I saw a video by Jorn last night. What a embarassing and crappy video..Good voice though. He did an album with Norwegian Mundanus Imperium back in the days. Ok album.

Have to add another band to my list. Anorexia Nervosa. After hearing the 3 last albums, I Have been forced to reconsider my thoughts on writing music. I was in the middle of a new song when I got hold of their albums. I was kind of struck-out. Because they have so much emotions and personality in their work. I write music based on standards. "I just cant use those chords..what a clishe..this is to blabla". After hearing them I have come to realize that I have to put more personality into what I do. I often think "this is to wierd..no one will understand or like this exept myself". But I`m going to work a lot more with those kind of ideas in the future...

I´ve similar problems... For quite some time, I was completely locked while trying to write some music, because I used to think "too obvious", "everybody uses that chord progression" etc. etc. In the end, I found myself not being able to do shit :-)
So now, I just do whatever feels right and fuck the rest :D

Centurion, about that band, what kind of music do they play?

Centurion
04 February 2005, 23:30
Anorexia Nervosa plays symphonic black metal. But not in the "polished" way bands like Dimmu do. They have much more rawness and feel in the music. They have a combination of the hatefullness and ugliness of the rawer black metal bands, but musicaly they are much more advanced and technical. Musch of it reminds me of Emperor.

I have 3 songs from the new Kamelot album. It is great stuff. A bit less power metal this time. More progg. The album should be out now? I will buy it as soon as I see it. I have never cared about them. I thought they were typical "knight metal". I just got some tracks after reading that Shagy from Dimmu borgir is a guest artist on the album. Anyway, I got hold of some tracks from their last album too (Epica I think..). And it was not typical "knight metal". I think they have a own way of doing it..and I think the vocalist have a great voice. Not that typical nasty high pitch vocal.

I really like Kamelot, mostly because they have that unique sound as you described yourself. And the singer (Roy Khan) is awesome, and you should know him, because he is Norwegian. He also sang with Conception back in the day.

By Knight Metal, do you then mean typical power metal ala "DRAAAAAAAAGOOOOOON, GRAB YOUR SWORD, UNITED WE STAND TO FIGHT OF THE EVIL INVAAAAAAAAAAAAADERS. THEY RAVAGE AND KILL IN THE NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT"... something like that?

Yeah, basicly that is what I mean by "knight metal" :D I`m not much into that style. Like power metal and a lot of heavy metal bands with guys singing high notes. I have nothing against that kind of vocal use as long as the singer can do it well. Some singers have it more natural and make it sound good. What I realy hate is vocalists who have to push them realy hard to reach those high notes. It is easy to hear it when they do. Good examples of good vocalists who did this kind of singing very well is Rob Halford and Tony H from norwegian TNT. They made those high tones sound so aggresive and cool. Listen to Judas Priest`s Painkiller album, and you see what I mean. must be the greatest heavy metal album of all times I think. But I just think a lot of heavy and powermetal vocalists have shitty voices..

I did not know that Kamelot`s singer was Norwegian..wow...Well, since he is so good he have to be..right? :D

Classic Metal: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Dio

Classic Hard Rock: KISS, AC/DC, Van Halen, Scorpions

80's Metal: Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, Dokken, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, GNR, Stryper, Tesla

Prog Metal: Queensryche (my all-time favorite band), Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Vanden Plas, Symphony X

Power Metal: Balance of Power, Tad Morose, Pink Cream 69, Edguy

Speed/Thrash: Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax

Current Metal: Nevermore, Evergrey, Mercenary, Into Eternity, Iced Earth

Goth Metal: Evanescence, Lacuna Coil

Melodic Death Metal: Opeth

Extreme Metal: Killswitch Engage, Mudvayne, Soilwork

Alternative/Nu Metal: Tool, A Perfect Circle, Dirsturbed, Godsmack, System of Down, Linkin Park, POD

Grunge Metal (contrary to popular belief I classify Grunge as a sub genre of Metal): Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden

Metal Rock Alternative (this grew out of Grunge Metal): 3 Doors Down, Hoobastank, Creed, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, Staind, Trapt

And these are just my faves out the above "Metal" genre's. I have an listen to many more bands than this.

And this doesn't even touch on the Alternative, Pop, Power Pop, R&B/Soul, Rap/Hip-Hop Genres which I do listen to occassionally as well.

Classic Metal: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne, Dio

** Some good picks, but where the fuck is King Diamond???

Classic Hard Rock: KISS, AC/DC, Van Halen, Scorpions

** Van Halen had some good songs, as did KISS and Scorpions, but most definately not a fan of any of them... I saw Scorpions live once, and I left after 2 songs... they sucked!

80's Metal: Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, Dokken, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, GNR, Stryper, Tesla

**These rule: Tesla, Guns'N'Roses and... well, that's it! The rest is nothing for me!

Prog Metal: Queensryche (my all-time favorite band), Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Vanden Plas, Symphony X

** Some good bands, but there are some many better prog bands out there imo!

Power Metal: Balance of Power, Tad Morose, Pink Cream 69, Edguy

** BoP has some good vocals, TM has some good riffs, PC69 is great, but isn't that hard rock? Only a few songs is power metallish. Edguy just sucks... imo!

Speed/Thrash: Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax

**Where the fuck is Overkill and Exodus? Not to mention so many more great thrash bands... but those two are freaking classics!

Current Metal: Nevermore, Evergrey, Mercenary, Into Eternity, Iced Earth

**Mercenary and Into Eternity could categorize as progressive melodic deathy-ish metal kinda thing, while Evergrey could go as power or prog metal and Nevermore and Iced Earth could be US power metal.

Goth Metal: Evanescence, Lacuna Coil

**Not my thing!

Melodic Death Metal: Opeth

** LOOOOVE Opeth... But I don't hear the melodic death metal you seem to hear, whereas bands like In Flames, Soilwork and Dark Tranquility are typical examples (in my mind)

Extreme Metal: Killswitch Engage, Mudvayne, Soilwork

**Hardcore???

Alternative/Nu Metal: Tool, A Perfect Circle, Dirsturbed, Godsmack, System of Down, Linkin Park, POD

**You like POD, Godsmack and Linkin Park??? Man, you truly are very openminded...! I can't say I agree, but I can say I think it is cool!

Grunge Metal (contrary to popular belief I classify Grunge as a sub genre of Metal): Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden

** yeah... well, not metal, but rock, but we agree! You should check out Bruce Dickinsons soloalbum called Skunkworks, since it is a bit grungy!

Metal Rock Alternative (this grew out of Grunge Metal): 3 Doors Down, Hoobastank, Creed, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, Staind, Trapt

** My opinion : YUCK to them all, but to each his own[8D]

Haha... I have a little job, where I work with music, meaning I get promos, hear most music! Music is my life... and just for record, I listen to it all LEGALLY, I constantly trade cd's and sell cd's... Still I cannot get my collection under 400 (which is all I have space for at the moment)

and I have a girlfriend thank you... hehe!!!

I don't know if you guys were bitching or whatever, but if I think it is nice to discuss music, why not let me? I don't see the problem...
It is not that I am telling people what is right or what is wrong... except for Nightwish, but I hope that Marina know I am kidding there! We all have our own taste!

Never did get into King Diamond or Mercyful Fate. Just couldn't take the falsetto and over the top Satanism. I respect him as an artist but he just never was my cup of tea.

quote:80's Metal: Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, Dokken, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, GNR, Stryper, Tesla

**These rule: Tesla, Guns'N'Roses and... well, that's it! The rest is nothing for me!

At least we can agree on these. Although for me Motley rules all 80's Metal bands. Just saw them on their reunion....truly epic.

quote: Prog Metal: Queensryche (my all-time favorite band), Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Vanden Plas, Symphony X

** Some good bands, but there are some many better prog bands out there imo!

Not really huge into Prog and Queensryche hasn't really done anything remotely Prog since Promised Land. But I still consider them my favorite band and classify them as THE band that truly defined the genre. I know many will ask what about Rush....definitely Prog...but not very "Metal" and I really can't stand Geddy Lee's vocals at all. IMO of course.

quote: Power Metal: Balance of Power, Tad Morose, Pink Cream 69, Edguy

** BoP has some good vocals, TM has some good riffs, PC69 is great, but isn't that hard rock? Only a few songs is power metallish. Edguy just sucks... imo!

Edguy has lost some of it's luster of late and I don't listen to them much anymore. Heathen Machine was incredible. PC69 missed their decade by about 20 years. They would have been HUGE in the 80's. As far as what to classify them as..<shrug>....I've seen them called Power Metal so that's what I classified them as.

quote:Speed/Thrash: Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax

**Where the fuck is Overkill and Exodus? Not to mention so many more great thrash bands... but those two are freaking classics!

Anthrax was as far into the Speed Thrash realm that I ventured. I was a total Glam Boy in the 80's and other than those 3 bands above I just didn't get into Speed/Thrash Metal

quote:Current Metal: Nevermore, Evergrey, Mercenary, Into Eternity, Iced Earth

**Mercenary and Into Eternity could categorize as progressive melodic deathy-ish metal kinda thing, while Evergrey could go as power or prog metal and Nevermore and Iced Earth could be US power metal.

LOL!! I couldn't figure out what to classify these band either because they cross several sub-genres, sometimes in a single song. Call them whatever you want but right now Mercenary, Nevermore and Everygrey are dominating most of my listening right now.

quote:Goth Metal: Evanescence, Lacuna Coil

**Not my thing!

Evanescence is one of my favorite bands at this point. Absolutely was obsessed with Fallen. From there I discovered Lacuna Coil...Comalies is a fantastic album. I just dig this style of music.

quote:Melodic Death Metal: Opeth

** LOOOOVE Opeth... But I don't hear the melodic death metal you seem to hear, whereas bands like In Flames, Soilwork and Dark Tranquility are typical examples (in my mind)

I can't say I love Opeth but I do like them now. I think Opeth is very melodic in parts. A Fair Judgment for example. It took Damnation for me to even give Opeth's earlier material a chance. Up until very recently I was anti "Cookie Monster Vocals". I saw Opeth and Porcupine Tree together last year and was really impressed with Opeth. But I'm not a huge fan of Death Metal or pure Death Vocals....got have some clean melodic vocals mixed in.

quote:Extreme Metal: Killswitch Engage, Mudvayne, Soilwork

**Hardcore???

Perhaps. I have my own classification and sub-genre system. Whatever you want to classify these bands...I dig 'em.

quote: Alternative/Nu Metal: Tool, A Perfect Circle, Dirsturbed, Godsmack, System of Down, Linkin Park, POD

**You like POD, Godsmack and Linkin Park??? Man, you truly are very openminded...! I can't say I agree, but I can say I think it is cool!

Yep. I really do like them....a lot. If you think that's open minded I wonder what you'd say if I told I think Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway CD is phenomenal. :-)

quote:Grunge Metal (contrary to popular belief I classify Grunge as a sub genre of Metal): Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden

** yeah... well, not metal, but rock, but we agree! You should check out Bruce Dickinsons soloalbum called Skunkworks, since it is a bit grungy!

Grunge Rock...okay...nice that we agree. :-) Dickinson's Skunkwords was decent...I prefer The Chemical Wedding for solo Dickinson.

quote: Metal Rock Alternative (this grew out of Grunge Metal): 3 Doors Down, Hoobastank, Creed, Nickelback, Puddle of Mudd, Staind, Trapt

Well... I thought the masks was for pure promotion! To give them an image... just like how KISS got big back in the day! But please... enlighten me! ;) And don't give me the one that says they are shy, because that is BS!!!

Uhm... live performance is all about energy, and though I do believe that is something SlipKnot CAN do, then I am having trouble believing that they can get in touch with their fans! Never seen them, so I can be VERY wrong!

@Phil --- King Diamond is not satanic, with the exception of House of God, which is antichrist at most!

Agree on Queensryche, though DT is still the greatest prog METAL band (Images and Words)!

I think the best PC69 albums is the last 3... funny!!! Haven't heard that much of their old stuff though... but they are great live!

Opeth rules... hands down! And Damnation is awesome for what it is... I have heard of many first starting to like Opeth after hearing that album! Weird!!!

Never heard about that Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway CD, so can't tell! But I think Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes is awesome as hell, so I am in no position to judge anyone!

I prefer Accident of Birth by Dickinson... but Chemical is very close! What do you think of the new album??? I like it, but Bruce is getting too old nowadays, so his vox is too "raw"!

Well I wasn't involved in your ongoing Slipknot conversation but masks or no masks Slipknot is quality Extreme Metal to my ears. The more I hear the more I like.

quote:

Hate to disagree here but "back in the day" King Diamond himself was a "self avowed Satanist". Not that I'm against that at all....I'm not religious at all. (I'm an atheist myself so I'll listen to everything from Stryper to Slayer). I just thought his gimmic was kinda cartoonish and over the top and I don't think his vocals are very appealing at all.

quote:
Agree on Queensryche, though DT is still the greatest prog METAL band (Images and Words)!

Curently, I'll agree that DT is the pinnacle of the Prog Metal Genre although they are far from a perfect band. However, when DT and Queensryche toured together in 2003 it was obvious that Geoff Tate even today just blows LaBrie off the stage. LaBrie couldn't touch Tate in his prime. When the 2 bands came out and Tate sang Peruvian Skies...goosebumps man. Just incredible. I'm hoping to find a boot of that performance because Tate's rendition of Peruvian Skies is so much better IMO. I really like DT but for me their weakness are LaBrie and their propensity to meander too much musically in a song. Train of Thought for me is nearly a perfect DT album. Images and Words is probably my 3rd favorite.

quote:

I only have Thunderdome and Endangerd...love 'em both but they are pretty similar.

I'll just respectfully disagree that "Opeth rules..hand down" and Damnation is awesome...PERIOD. I know many long time Opeth fans were very disappointed at the PT/Opeth show as they were expecting to here some the old "classics". I was glad they didn't play them....it just wan't what that show was about. I'm going to see Opeth this month at a Metal show....so I'm looking forward to seeing them in all of their Death Metal glory.

quote:

Love Tori Amos too!! I have most of her albums. Other Alternative Female singers I really dig: Sarah McLaughlin, Dido, Alanis Morissette, Dolores O'Riordan (Cranberries), Natalie Merchant (10,000 Maniacs).

quote:

Chemical is my favorite but I never got too much into solo Dickinson. Nothing will match Iron Maiden's ultimate trifecta of Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind and Poweslave. ;) I can't wait for this years OzzFest. Iron Maiden is doing only song from their 1st 4 albums: Iron Maiden, Killers, NotB, PoM! Add Black Sabbath, Rob Zombie, Mudvayne, Killswitch Engage and it's well worth the outrageous ticket prices. :-)

King Diamond has later said that he is no longer a member of LaVeys satanic church! And his gimmicks only make his stageperformance much more interesting! I love it!

I have never been so dissapointed in a band, as I was with Queensryche when I saw them! Maybe tate had a bad day, but he lost count, missed some notes, forgot lyrics... awful performance by him! Labrie is nothing special live though!

Opeth puts on a boring live performance! They play GREAT and tight, but they are nothing special live! I have seen them twice, and one time it was just nice to close your eyes and sit back and enjoy! And to each his own, but Opeth does what they do best, noone is even remotely close to them!

They are VERY nice guys, partied with them a few years ago (just to brag), but their music is far from nice! It is typical Euro happy power metal, that should forever and ever stand in the shadow of Stratovarius! The day they get original I will buy you all a beer! Oh and the vocals... Yeah but weren't you bustin Slipknot's chops for having the "mask gimmick". ;) King Diamond is one of the most gimmicky performers out there, but that's not my main reason for disliking him. If you love him great. I don't care for his vocal style or his gimmick.

That's a bummer. When did you see them? The upcoming Judas Priest/Queensryche show on 7/2 will be my 18th Queensryche show. Out of those 18 shows I can hosestly say that only 2 of them were bad (Tribe tour and Q2k tour). All other shows were good to mind blowingly great.

Mads ~ I never said I was seeking for originality in SA. I just think they make some great songs, which many people can relate to. And I think Tony's vocals are amazing! Just listen to Wildfire. My God. That man has learned a lot during these years.
I was invited to their concert in Copenhagen last year, but couldn't. So I cannot really judge them in that way. From the live recordings I've heard he's amazing. Well... as long as you find something good in them, then all the power to you! They are nice guys, and very down to earth! I do agree with Lamia though, they are a bunch of whiny sissies, and this is coming from one who likes Stratovarius! And concerning the live record, then it is produced afterwards, so what you hear there may not be the real thing (haven't heard the live album though)! Let my point out that I think the singer is better live than on albums, even though he does miss a lot of notes!

And Lamia... King Diamond kicks ass, never made a bad album (will just call Abigail pt. II for not good and extremely boring... hehe:D)

Bumzen ~ I do find something good in them. Everytime I hear it I get incredibly happy or incredibly unhappy. And I love it.. :D Maybe, but it sounds kind of live to me.. [:P] I think Tony is amazing both live and in studio. I think he managed well, considering that he never took any singing lessons (and I know what you're going to say [:P]).

I actually liked him at first, and I praised Winterhearts Guild to be an awesome album when it first got out, but after a week I lost total interest in them and I noticed all the things I missed in their music, plus I noticed the bad guitars and vocals!

OMG... You are in deep trouble here! Nobody, and I F**KING mean NOBODY says anything bad about the kings vocal!!! His falsetto is used to extress emotions in the story, and he does it perfectly, and not overexaggerating at any point, on any album (YES... I am a big fanboy)!

Playing fast does not mean playing good! The guitarsound is boring, and too neutral, but that is common for Finnish bands (except CoB of course). But his riffs... GOOD GOD... The day he writes a catchy riff, I buy you a beer!!!

[:0]GOOD GOD[:0]... Or whoever!!!

I will now indulge you all in a secret that is not to be told outside of this board... are you ready?

FINNISH METAL IS OVERRATED! Finnish metal is pussy-metal (no offense intended)... and it is only because of Universal that they are so well known! Of course they have a few bands that is worthwhile listening to, but that is nothing compared to, let's say Sweden. What finnish band can compete with bands like Therion, Opeth, Evergrey (old), Morgana Lefay, Candlemass, In Flames, Soilwork (old) Dark Tranquility, Malmsteen not to forget Europe[8D]:D[:o)]

That's right... only CoB stand a chance...
And don't you dare say Nightwish...

Nightwish, Nightwish, Nightwish, Nightwish... Nightwish! [:P] ...Nightwish...
The bands from Sweden you mentioned are great! No doubt! But you should not say that the Finnish bands are only known because of Universal. That does not make sense. I heard about Nightwish from a friend, I loved them, then I went looking for more from Finland. I found Apocalyptica, Sonata Arctica, CoB (whome I would not have heard of if not for their song being released on a Nightwish single), Eternal Tears Of Sorrow (!), Battlelore, Tarot, Sinergy, Finntroll, Moonsorrow, Darkwoods My Betrothed and I could keep on going!
Remove Therion from your list. They are not worth mentioning between the others.

UGH... NOT NIGHTWISH!!! And yes, they are known because of Universal! Spinefarm or whatever their old label is called is owned by Universal, therefore they use Universals distribution channels. Roadrunner, which they are on now I think, is also distributed by Universal. This means lots of promotion, easy access to their music etc.! Oh... and don't think I think that it is just something like Britney Spears that just gets promoted its ass off, and thus sells a lot. I think Nightwish has worked very hard to get their success, and I also think they deserve it, but still it is mostly thanks to Universal.

I cannot say I know all the bands you mentioned, but some of them are actually quite good, I just didn't think of them (apocalyptica and Tesla, but also Stratovarius is quite decent), and Battlelore I think my boss likes quite a lot, so they must have something. The rest I either don't know or simply dislike.

And last... slap yourself for saying that about Therion! Any band that releases albums Theli, Vovin and Secret of the Runes deserves to be on ANY list. But instead we can add Lions Share, Mayadome, Loch Vostok, Astral Doors and Platitude?!:D

Hehe! Vovin is an okay album, I can listen to it without being forced to do that, but the other stuff... I do not know - it is not my style. I think they look misplaced between In Flames, Candlemass and Dark Tranquillity. The first album I heard of Therion was Secret Of The Runes and it totally scared me away. Too much church music for me. :)

"You can say that about every band. Of course promotion is important. How can they be known if people do not know about them or do not have acces to their music?" - Marina

Uhm... What do you mean? Because not many metalbands are distributed through Universal. Also notice that most metalbands that do OK today is either on Roadrunner or Sanctuary... and therefore distributed by Universal, hence they get better sales. I am not saying this in a negative way, I am just saying that this is the way it works most of the time.

Vovin is an excellent album... and how can you like that and not Theli? Theli is much more metal, since it was intended as a sideproject... until that album, Therion was death metal.

Nonononononononono... Sonata Arctica as well! Stratovarius, though liking them is also quite pussylike among with other bands I cannot think of right now!

and come on... Ektomorf simply sucks! I agree that it is definately not pussy metal, but it is so booooooooooring! Sentenced I still need to hear to make a judgement on.

Let it also be known that even though I do like some Finnish bands, I can still think they are overrated.

BumZen ~ *sighs* Okay then. I fully respect your opinion on them. But you still missed the coolest song like Dead Gardens (what an ending!), Romanticide (probably their heaviest song?), Ghost Love Score (oh heaven!) and Higher Than Hope. But at least you gave it a shot. :)

*closes her eyes on the last reply and sighs.. - Again.. Picks up her Sonata Arcrica "Silence" cd and kisses it: "Mine, my own... my precious..."*

a few songs from ektomorf aren´t so bad! and of course can you think that finnish metal is overrated! how do you discribe "pussy metal"?

BumZen
25 July 2005, 20:17
Pussy metal = the singer is sounds gay/has a dildo up his ass/got his balls cut off (Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Jacobs Dream, Iron Fire). there is no crunch to the guitar which means its attempt to sound metal fails miserably. and basically the entire atmosphere of the music.

And I know I am quite narrowminded... hehe

Damnit, how can you say that Sonata Arctica ruins the mood, they set a perfect mood. Have you ever listened to Replica or Blank File, or for that matter the whole CD Ecliptica? Blank File and My Land must be two of THÉ best metal songs I ever heard.

And to stay on-topic
My favorites are:

- Blind Guardian
- Evergrey
- Pink Floyd
- The Police
- EdGuy
- Sonata Arctica
- Iron Maiden
- Kamelot (they were great on GMM)
- Dragonforce (same)
- Stratovarius
- Hammerfall
- Burzum
- Bathory
- ...

Havamal - Niice music taste!
I agree Ecliptica is a great album! 8th Commandment, Destruction Preventer, Replica, FullMoon, UnOpened are on my top-10 over favourite Sonata Arctica songs!

SoD - Northern lights?? [:o] Where? [:P]

hö? it was a question! are in denmark also northern lights? or only more in finland and norway?
i always get e-mail if northern lights are here in germany, but that is a rareness! for two years ago, there were northern lights in germany, but the wether was so bad and the sky was full of clouds! so i did not see them! i hate it...

hehehe
i lived in canada for a few years when i was young. i've never seen anything like that before and after that. it shines in thousands of colors and even moves like a banner blowing in the wind. very impressing.

SoD - about the Northern Lights Denmark gets it RARELY (I don't think I have ever seen it myself)!!! Sweden, Norway and Finland get it a lot though!

Havamal - Welcome to you! Taste is weird thing, because it is never the same! I personally think that Sonata Arctica generally write weak songs, while you think they write some of the best metal songs ever! I suggest you read any damn discussion between Oceansoul and I, and you will find out what I think of Sonata Arctica :)
Besides them and Bathory I think you have a very great and diverse taste in music, which is undeniably cool!
